Surf Life Saving Trophies
SURF LIFE SAVING TROPHIES & NIPPERS TROPHIES
Surf Lifesavers are Aussie Beach Culture. People around the world watch the heroic actions of our Lifeguards on “Bondi Rescue”. It’s interesting to see how Surf Life Saving developed in Australia over the last century. Before 1902 it was against the law to swim in public during daylight hours. William Gocher, an editor from Manly, challenged this by swimming during the day. Consequently, the law was changed so that people could bathe if they were suitably dressed. Men and women had to swim separately but later mixed bathing was allowed. Drownings increased as weaker swimmers began swimming in the sea.
Bondi Surf Bathers’ Lifesaving Club was formed in 1907 and soon the first iconic surf-reel was used. Importantly the Surf Bathing Association of NSW evolved in 1907. Eventually, the states joined together in 1922 to become the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia. In 1915 the first Australian surf life-saving championships were held at Bondi and Nipper's programs operated from 1920 through the 30s. In 1919 the Association introduced meritorious awards for acts of exceptional bravery and resource in the surf.
